Shortly ago, Mike Garafolo tweeted that sources had informed him that the 49ers would be placing cornerback Richard Sherman on injured reserve. Ian Rapoport later confirmed that it was a calf strain.

Ahkello Witherspoon replaced Sherman on the final four snaps of Sunday's loss, though there was no word from head coach Kyle Shanahan regarding an injury in his postgame press conference nor the press conference he had on Monday.

All indications are that Witherspoon will get the nod to start opposite Emmanuel Moseley Sunday against the New York Jets, as Matt Maiocco indicated that CB Jason Verrett did not practice at all last week due to a hamstring injury. This would also suggest that CB Dontae Johnson will again be called up from the practice squad to help bolster their depth and aid on special teams for Sunday's game.

While this news is both sudden and concerning for Sherman's health through the rest of the season, this does not seem to be something the team is overly concerned about.
