The best time of the year is right around the corner. It is the end of summer, meaning it is time for fall. The leaves will start changing; cooler weather is upon us, and so is football. The time of year where friends and family gather together, eat food, drink beer, and watch grown men trying to kill each other on the gridiron. However, even though this sport brings people together, not everyone is invited to the party. Nevertheless, as players know, coming out of college and throughout their career, this is the nature of the business. As Eminem once said, “Look, if you had one shot or one opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted, in one moment would you capture it or just let it slip?”
I think we can all safely say that Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and George Kittle are a guarantee to make the roster. There is not even a need to talk about them. I would also venture to say Ross Dwelley is also a pretty safe candidate at the tight-end position. He had filled in nicely for both Kittle and Kyle Juszczyk when they were out with injuries.
Although he was cut a couple of times last season by the 49ers, I think Mohamed Sanu could make the roster this season. One of the main reasons is the fact that Kendrick Bourne is now with the New England Patriots. That one still stings a little. Jalen Hurd is entering his third year with the 49ers and, due to injuries, has not yet played in a regular-season game. I still think Hurd could make the roster for two reasons. One, he is a big physical player, and Kyle Shanahan likes big physical players. Also, the 49ers stuck by Jerick McKinnon when he missed his first two seasons with the team but kept gave him his opportunity when he was finally healthy.
Another receiver who could make the roster is last year’s seventh-round pick,Jauan Jennings. Do not let the fact he was drafted so late fool you. Shanahan has made starters out of undrafted free agents in the past. Jennings has been making noise lately because he has one opportunity to seize everything, and he is doing his best to capture it.Jennings may have outworked Richie James enough to see James out of a job before the start of the season.
That is five wide receivers, and I think the 49ers may only keep one more on the roster. I have already stated that I do not think it is James. Even when the news came out that the 49ers signed Travis Benjamin, I was convinced he was a camp body. They gave him no guarantees, which means he can be cut without any dead cap. Does Nsimba Webster have a spot on the roster? Rumors are that he is making the most of his opportunities as well. The nature of the business does not guarantee you will always make the cut and you could be the outside looking in. Just ask 27-year-old Todd Gurley, who was a force to be reckoned with coming out the backfield a couple of years ago and is currently a free agent.
