Kyle Shanahan indicated during his press conference Monday that wide receiver Deebo Samuel suffered a setback in his recovery from a jones fracture during the offseason.
“Usually after one day after being sore, we thought it was just because he worked it hard,” Shanahan said during the presser. “But when that got worse each day and not better, we knew it ended up being a little bit of a setback. That’s why we ended up putting him on IR.”
The protocols the NFL put in place to compensate for the ongoing pandemic mean that the 49ers only need to keep Samuel on the injured reserve list for three weeks.
Because of when the injury happened, the 49ers had to act fast to place Samuel on IR for it to count towards the three week list.
Shanahan confirmed that the 49ers still plan to have him available to the team for their game against the Eagles on October 4, but will be careful to take his recovery slow and potentially reaggravate the injury and put his season in jeopardy.
"Really hoping to get him back by the Eagles game," Shanahan said.
"We got to see how this heals and how it goes right now,”
