The San Francisco 49ers will be signing free-agent safety Obi Melifonwu, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN and Melifonwu's agent.

Melifonwu was selected in the second round of the 2017 draft by the Oakland Raiders but did not appear in any games as he bounced on and off of injured reserve in 2017 due to a hip injury that required surgery. After being released on October 23,2018, he signed a two-year contract with the New England Patriots where he appeared in two games totaling three tackles.

The 49ers have a bevy of players hitting free agency in a few months. Signing a player like Melifonwu now and getting him acquainted with the system early gives him the best possible chance to compete for a roster spot in the spring and summer.
