49ers Extend Trent Williams and Sign Alex Mack
The 49ers and offensive lineman Trent Williams caused a frenzy in the early hours of St. Patrick’s Day after Trent posted to his Instagram story a seeming confirmation that he had agreed to a new contract extension to stay in SF.
The deal was confirmed by ESPNs Dianna Russini, who broke down the six-year, $138 million dollar deal with $55 million guaranteed, $30.1 million of which is a signing bonus.
Those numbers make Williams the highest paid offensive lineman in NFL history and also set a record for the most given at signing to an offensive lineman, per the NFLPA.
The theatrics weren’t done though, as another post on Williams Instagram seemed to hint at the 49ers working on signing another lineman: Former Atlanta Falcons center Alex Mack.
The move was later confirmed by NFL Network insider Ian Rapaport, where Mack will reunite with head coach Kyle Shanahan, who has coached Mack in Cleveland and Atlanta. No word yet on what Macks contract numbers look like.
The 49ers had three major tasks for Free Agency to set themselves up how they wanted before the draft: re-sign fullback Kyle Juszczyk, re-sign cornerback Jason Verrett and re-sign Williams. Accomplishing those was going to be no easy feat. Now that the Niners have completed those tasks as well as signing Mack and former Los Angeles Rams OLB Samson Ebukam, the team can focus on a draft in which they currently have nine picks.
