The Armchair Quarterback Volume 40: Slip ‘n Slide Take it to the House

It was wet. It was dirty. And it was glorious. I am obviously speaking of the San Francisco 49ers’ victory last Sunday against the Washington Redskins. The team struggled mightily on the offense, in part due to the wet field conditions at FedExField in Maryland. But the defense posted a shut-out, and they walked away with a 9-0 victory. And a shut-out is always something to proud of. The 49ers defense allowed only 154 total yards and recorded three sacks. Let’s rank those sacks by the level of celebration that was provided after them.
3. Dee Ford- Tumble Sack
Edge rusher Dee Ford got an absolute “gimme” sack against the Redskins. With under two minutes to go before the half and facing a third-and-6, Ford flew into the backfield untouched, and somersaulted over quarterback Case Keenum- bringing him down in the process- for the sack. After the sack Ford slapped hands with teammates and headed for the sideline, no big-time celebration. But what most people don’t realize is there was a sack and a celebration all in one. According to multiple unverified sources, Ford had been watching a lot of gymnastics over the weekend. And he wanted to recreate a tumble he had seen. And thus, he created the “tumble sack”!
2. Arik Armstead- Eating
Defensive lineman Arik Armstead is having one of his best seasons to date, and he continued produce on Sunday. Early in the third quarter with just over 11 minutes to go and on third-and-5, Armstead got to Keenum to force a fourth down. Immediately after the sack he did his trademark rubbing the belly celebration. Armstead was hungry and he ate against the Redskins! Needless to say, the beast was fed!
1. Nick Bosa- Slip ‘n Slide
The most iconic sack celebration on Sunday came from rookie edge rusher Nick Bosa. On the very last play of the game with victory already in hand for the 49ers he got a walk-off sack on Keenum. But this was less of a walk-off and more of a…slide-off! After the sack Bosa slid across the wet field in what reminded millennial fans of their childhood summers playing on the Slip ‘n Slide in their front yards. It was such an infectious gesture that his other teammates on the defensive line joined in and started sliding. And then as his other teammates came on the field to celebrate the win, many others broke out into a slide as well. Due to the nature of the celebration and the absolute appropriateness of it, it receives a 10 out of 10. And it lands at number one on our list!
6-0 and Beyond
The 49ers have played extremely well up to this point in the season and it shows as their record is 6-0. The competition will only get more difficult from here on out. But that only means bigger and better sack celebrations are not just a right, but necessary! We look forward to topical and location specific celebrations to come!
