Victory in a Land Called Fantasy: How Will Joe Staleys Injury Affect 49ers Fantasy Value in Week 3?

Not since 2012 have the 49ers started a season 2-0. Not for 30 years have they started the season with two road game wins; they also won the Super Bowl that year. But despite the fact the defense has looked great two weeks in a row,and despite the fact the offense stated slow in Week 1 and turned it on in Week 2’s blowout against the Bengals, there is a storm on the horizon.

Left tackle Joe Staley, Jimmy Garoppolo’s blindside, is out for the next 6-8 weeks with a broken fibula. Sometimes you feel like asking if the football gods hate San Francisco. What is the outlook for fantasy if you have Red and Gold players without their pro-bowl left tackle Joe Staley?

The offense could possibly take a dip. You should be slightly worried throwing Garoppolo out there as your starting quarterback. Maybe not so much against the dysfunctional Steelers this upcoming Sunday, which is followed by the Week 4 bye. But their next game after the bye is against the Browns. If you haven’t seen the Browns play, Myles Garrett eats offensive lineman for dinner and finishes his meal off with a quarterback soufflé.

If after the Bengals game you settled on Garoppolo as your quarterback I think he will be fine this week, but since you will need a different quarterback in Week 4 you may want to keep them instead of the handsome one.

Last week you could have played any one of the 49ers’ running backs and you would have been fine. If there is one thing Shanahan is great at doing it’s getting the running game going. Despite not having Staley I think the running backs will still produce and be fantasy-relevant,though I would not expect over 250 yards every week, especially with Staley out.

Although, I did pick up Raheem Mostert in a dynasty league because I need the running back help and I am considering playing him. Shanahan had two fantasy-relevant running backs in Freeman and Coleman when he was in Atlanta.

I am less bullish on the wide receivers, especially if Garoppolo does struggle. The 49ers are still looking for that guy to step up and be the number one. Deebo Samuel has definitely thrown his hat into the ring, but he is not quite there yet. All the 49ers receivers came late in drafts, so you should have other players you could play.

Kittle 3:16 says he’s going to whoop the defense’s ass, and that’s all I have to say about that.
