49ers Preseason Finale Preview

The 49ers play their final preseason game this Thursday against the Chargers, and then the real fun begins. But before we have real football with nachos, finger foods, and fantasy football, let us get through this final preseason game.

I wouldn’t expect too much from the offense this Thursday. Kyle Shanahan isn’t going to pull out anything fancy with third- and fourth-string players on the depth chart. We may have a deep pass from C.J. Beathard to next year’s Enterprise salesperson of the year but I wouldn’t expect much more than that.

One good thing is that Jimmy Garoppolo seemed to have worked himself into the week off. Had he come out and displayed the same performance against the Chiefs that he had against the Broncos, we have seen Jimmy Handsome for a series or two this Thursday. But I’m sure he’s earned the headset and nothing more.

I will be curious to see who plays wide receiver for the 49ers on Thursday because that could give us some indication on who is out or at least on the roster bubble. If you believe Marquise Goodwin, Dante Pettis, Deebo Samuel, Jalen Hurd, and Trent Taylor a lock to make the roster that leaves Kendrick Bourne, Malik Henry, Richie James, Jordan Matthews, and Chris Thompson fighting for the last spot ortwo. If Bourne or Matthews arealso in street clothes, then the 49ers have made their decision and everybody else will have to meet with Kyle Shanahan and turn in their playbook this weekend.

The other biggest thing to look at is how well Beathard and Nick Mullens play in this game. They are both fighting for the number two spot behind Garoppolo and this game could end up making the final decision for Shanahan and company.

Bottom line is we are already for next Thursday when the NFL officially begins and next Sunday when the 49ers take on Tampa Bay to startthe season for the Red and Gold. Thank God I have a fantasy draft during this game, it’s going to make it a lot more fun.
