Mother’s Day was this past Sunday. Many of the San Francisco 49ers and the Faithful alike took to social media to thank their mothers. The mothers were praised for all the amazing things they did for their children. However, there was one thing that should’ve been included in those thanks that seemed to be left out. For certain individuals they absolutely should’ve thanked their mothers for the epic names they were gifted.
The 49ers have had their fair share of players with amazingly awesome names. So here we count down the five most excellent names of players that have graced the 49ers rosters over the years.
5. Y.A. Tittle
“Hey diddle diddle, the Y.A. Tittle is going to make a big play, not little.” A legend of the early days of the 49ers, Yelberton Abraham Tittle was the quarterback of the team from 1951 to 1960. Although he never brought a title to the team, he was a prolific passer in his day. And while his passing records may have been broken, no other quarterback has come close to having a name that is so unique and rhymable!
4. Forrest Blue
Most people have heard of jungle green, but few have heard of Forrest Blue! He played on the offensive line for the 49ers from 1968-1974. During his time with the 49ers he was selected to four Pro Bowls and earned two first team All-Pro selections. He helped the team to multiple division titles as well. And had he won a Super Bowls during his playing days, best believe Forrest Blue would’ve been a candidate for a new Crayola color!
3. Anquan Boldin
I mean honestly how many fantasy football teams were named “Boldin the Beautiful” after Anquan Boldin? The answer is too many. The wide receiver came to the 49ers at the tail-end of his career. He was with the team from 2013 to 2015. In two of those three seasons he posted 1,000 plus yards receiving. An absolute professional on and off the field, with a name that just has a flow to it!
2. DeForest Buckner
An absolute monster on the defensive line, DeForest Buckner is currently on the squad, having been a 2016 first-round pick. He had his breakout season in 2018, racking up 12 sacks and a Pro Bowl selection. To really understand the remarkableness of his name, let’s consider the metaphor of opposing quarterbacks being trees. Because he really “DeForests” them!
1. Takeo Spikes
Stop for a second and think about a player that has the letters “TKO” in order and the word “Spikes” in his name. That is intimidating without even knowing him. Now add the image of that jacked neck of his, and the intimidation rating is going through the roof! The linebacker Spikes played for the 49ers from 2008 to 2010. He was a great tackler and an even better team leader. Spikes’ name is not one that is easy to forget. But neither were his sack celebration dances.
Honorable Mention: Tyshun "Deebo" Samuel
Although Tyshun "Deebo" Samuel has not played a snap for the 49ers as yet, he still deserves an honorable mention on this list. His government name alone has a lot of flair. But throw in the “Deebo” moniker and we have a man that will be bullying defensive backs all day! Though he didn’t crack the top five today he will definitely be eligible for future consideration.
