So, we have gotten past the madness in March that is… NFL Free Agency! What, you thought I was talking about something else?
All the big-time free agents that were expected to make a splash did. Many were locked up by new teams. The two big time wide receivers whose names were linked to the San Francisco 49ers, Antonio Brown and Odell Beckham Jr., both ended up elsewhere. Earl Thomas, the former Seattle Seahawks safety who was being heavily recruited by former teammate Richard Sherman also did not end up on the 49ers. Nevertheless, the 49ers made some great moves in free agency that should set them up for success in the 2019 season. And that means we have some position groups that need nicknames. Here are some great options that the 49ers should adopt.
Legion of Zoom (Running backs)
Tevin Coleman, formerly of the Atlanta Falcons, was an addition to an already loaded backfield. But it was a great acquisition as he played in Kyle Shanahan’s offense back in Atlanta in his first two seasons, when Shanahan was the offensive coordinator there. But more importantly he has a 4.39 40-yard dash speed. When you combine that with Matt Breida at 4.39, Jerick McKinnon at 4.41, and Raheem Mostert at 4.34, the 49ers may actually have the fastest backfield in the league. By default, zoom should be somewhere in their nickname! Legion of Zoom is the best possible nickname for them. We borrow this nickname of course from the Legion of Doom from DC Comics. And nothing of its like has ever been used ever… EVER!
Guardians of the Golden Gate (Defense)
It was well documented that the 49ers struggled mightily on defense this past season. No one is disputing that. That very reason is why the team’s front office was persistent in finding solid defensive additions. Linebacker Kwon Alexander, edge rusher Dee Ford, and cornerback Jason Verrett were all added to the roster via free agency. And after the draft, with a few more key defensive acquisitions, maybe someone whose name rhymes with Stick Nosa, the 49ers defense would look like a squad set to make an impact in the 2019 season.
As far as nicknames go, the revamped defense would need something that pays homage to their location. And the Golden Gate Bridge is just that. It is the entryway into California (for our purposes just go with it), and it is one of the most iconic landmarks associated with the San Francisco Bay Area. Any good defensive unit representing the Bay Area would need to fully embellish their role as the Guardians of the Golden Gate!
More to Come…
This current 49er squad is young and still very much searching for an identity. As the season progresses through the draft and more free agent acquisitions, some of the question marks about the team’s personalities will be revealed. As that happens, we at 49ersHub will have some more unit and player nicknames for your viewing pleasure. Until then, stay “Faithful” my friends!
