This past Sunday the San Francisco 49ers finally bested their NFC West rivals the Seattle Seahawks after a 10-game losing streak. The last time prior to Sunday that the 49ers had defeated the Seahawks was December 8, 2013. While that doesn’t seem like that long ago, let’s face it, it definitely is. The team was still playing at Candlestick Park (RIP), Barack Obama was still the POTUS, and Kanye West was still mildly likable. Only two players on the current roster were on the 49ers at that time, those two being tight end Garrett Celek and offensive tackle Joe Staley (the wily veteran!). So where were the rest of the players on the current roster and what were they doing in 2013? Let’s take a look back at some key members of the team and where they were during that time.

Richard Sherman

The obvious first choice to examine is Richard Sherman. During the 2013 season he was a member of the opposing Seahawks and was a nightmare for opposing offenses all throughout that season. During that season he had a whopping 8 interceptions which led the league. To top that off he was a Pro Bowl and a first team All-Pro selection, not to mention he finished the season with a Super Bowl title! Not too shabby for a fifth-round pick!

Arik Armstead

Back in 2013 Arik Armstead was all QUACK’D out! That of course meaning he was attending the University of Oregon and was a member of both the Ducks’ football and basketball teams. It was his sophomore season and he recorded 15 tackles and 1 sack for the Ducks’ football team. However, one game into the basketball season, he decided to quit the team to focus on his football career. And 49er Faithful are sure glad he chose that path instead!

DeForest Buckner

2013 saw an equally QUACKY year for DeForest Buckner. He was also a member of the Oregon Ducks football team, playing alongside Armstead on the defensive line. In his sophomore season for the Ducks he recorded 39 tackles and 2.5 sacks. He was a defensive juggernaut and that season he even made President Obama proud to be his fellow alumni of Punahou High School!

Jimmy Garoppolo

2013 marked Jimmy G’s senior season at Eastern Illinois University. Amassing 5,050 yards passing and 53 touchdowns through 14 games, Garoppolo was an absolute sensation that year. Among the many accolades he reeled in that year, none were more prestigious than the Walter Payton Award which honors the best offensive player in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision. But the lesser known award of “most devilishly handsome quarterback” was clearly the one those rose his draft stock!

Kyle Shanahan

Head coach Kyle Shanahan was not always the main guy in charge. In 2013 he was the offensive coordinator of the Washington Redskins under head coach/ the man who raised him, Mike Shanahan. After a 2012 campaign in which the team saw a 10-6 finish that won them the NFC East division title, they were halted in the first round of the playoffs by the Seattle Seahawks. Unfortunately, the 2013 season did not bring about the same success. The Redskins were able to muster only a 3-13 record with many of the coaching staff, including Kyle and Mike, not being brought back the following season. Kyle however did not let that deter him from following his destined path. He continued to move away from his father’s shadow and build his own legacy brick by brick!

The 10-game losing streak against the Seahawks was painfully long and arduous for the 49ers and their Faithful. But as that streak finally ends in victory, maybe the team is one step closer to overcoming the “Curse of the Harbaughrino” (see volume 1 for ref.) and restoring glory to the franchise!
