Victory in a Land Called Fantasy: Who to Start, Who to Sit

After our first week without Jimmy Garoppolo we managed to learn a few things about the 49ers. C.J. Beathard may get himself killed and George Kittle did not lose any fantasy value because of the Garoppolo injury. This week the 49ers will take on Josh Rosen and the Arizona Cardinals. The good news is there are still some fantasy options for the red and gold, but who are they?

C.J. Beathard

Beathard had a decent game against the Chargers this past Sunday. He threw for 298 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. He also ran the ball seven times for 19 yards. The first interception wasn’t his fault either, Garrett Celek should have come down with the ball. Beathard could have easily had over 300 yards and three touchdowns in this game if not for that interception.

I still don’t think I would start him though. I want to see if he can stay consistent and as I said, he may get himself killed one Sunday. I would play someone like Andy Dalton or even Marcus Mariota over Beathard this week. SIT: C.J. Beathard

The Wide Receivers

As painful as it is for me to say, I don’t think you can count on the 49ers receiving corps moving forward. That could change, but as for now, I’m not putting them in my lineup. They’ll have their games, but which ones? The fact the Beathard threw for almost 300 yards and Garçon had the most number of yards for the 49ers’ wide receivers with only 52, tells me you cannot put your faith in them right now. SIT: All Wide Receivers

The Running Backs

I think playing Matt Breida this week will depend on the health of the offensive line. With both tackles and the center banged up, the offensive line did poorly in the running game against the Chargers this past Sunday. Who, I remind you, were without Joey Bosa. If they play, I’ll play Breida, if they don’t, I’m looking for other options.

Alfred Morris is the goal-line back for the 49ers, though I don’t know why, Breida seems more than adequate of punching the ball in. Regardless Morris is a boom or bust player, and I wouldn’t start him unless I was in a deeper league. SIT: Matt Breida, unless both Joe Staley and Mike McGlinchey start. SIT: Alfred Morris unless in a deeper league.

The Defense

The 49ers defense has not looked great the past four weeks. They have had their moments, but everyone has had their way with them. But that’s the NFL and this is fantasy. This week may end up being a week you can start the 49ers defense. They’ll be at home and facing a struggling Cardinals offense, with a poor offensive line, being led by a rookie quarterback. I’m not saying go out of your way to start them, but they might do well against the Cardinals. START: 49ers Defense.

The Tight Ends

I saved this one for last because I’m going to toot my own horn for a moment. From NFL.COM, Michael Fabiano, “Kittle is a tough player to bench, but can you trust him without Jimmy Garoppolo? Time will tell, but I'd fade him with C.J. Beathard under center and a matchup against the Chargers. Los Angeles has surrendered no touchdowns and an average of just 5.9 PPR points per game to tight ends. Beware Kittle as a streamer this week.” This was in his “Sit’em” section for tight ends last week.

What did I say last week? “George Kittle needs to be in your lineup. He would probably be a top three tight end if he can quit with the drops, but he and Beathard have a rapport going back to their college days at Iowa. In fact, last season he averaged more targets per game with Beathard than he did with Garoppolo. When Beathard went into the game last week his first pass was to Kittle; we can forget about the fact the refs stole the touchdown from the 49ers, but the point is the connection is there between the two of them.”

Kittle was the second-highest fantasy tight end this past weekend behind Jared Cook. He is becoming a plug him in and leave him tight end and I’m starting him again this week. Celek, don’t even bother having him on your roster, let alone starting him. START: George Kittle, SIT: Garrett Celek
