Victory in a Land Called Fantasy: Who to Start, Who to Sit

The 49ers may be without Jimmy Garoppolo until 2019, but the team must go on and so do we in fantasy. We should temper our expectations with C.J. Beathard under center unless he pulls a 2017 Nick Foles. So, let’s not waste any more time, who should you start and who should you sit?

C.J. Beathard

I was curious how Beathard did last season, so I went back into my archives to find out. What I found was that he was okay. In Week 10 of last season he was a top five quarterback. So, we know he can do it, but I don’t think I would start him his first week out. The team around Beathard is better than last season and he’s another year in the Shanahan offense, but he did struggle at times in the preseason and I would like to see him before I put my faith in him. SIT: C.J. Beathard

The Running Backs

Matt Breida was great the first two weeks, and last week against the Chiefs, the 49ers dodged a bullet when his second-quarter knee injury wasn’t considered serious. He was able to come back into the game but wasn’t involved as much as I think he would have been without the injury.

Breida is currently listed as questionable with a hyperextended knee. I am not worried about the change at quarterback hurting Breida’s value or usage. Last season Carlos Hyde was able to put together good games without Garoppolo, and Breida fits the Shanahan offense better than Hyde did. If he plays, he is in my lineup. If he is not I would start Morris, he isn’t as efficient as Breida, but can still be fantasy relevant. If I am in a deeper league with multiple flex spots I would start Morris even if Breida is playing. START: Matt Breida and Alfred Morris if Breida is out, or in a deep league with multiple flex spots.

The Wide Receivers

Pierre Garçon was on pace for exactly 1,000 yards last season before going on IR. He would be a great flex option especially with bye weeks starting this week. Washington and Carolina are on a bye in Week 4. Marquise Goodwin didn’t really get started until after Garoppolo took over as the starter, but he has really grown as a receiver. He is not just the field stretcher he once was. Garçon may end up as the number one receiver again with Beathard under center, but I’m throwing Goodwin into my lineup regardless and will continue to do so unless this team completely falls apart. At this point we cannot trust any of the other wide receivers. START: Pierre Garçon and Marquise Goodwin, SIT: Everyone else

The Tight End

George Kittle needs to be in your lineup. He would probably be a top three tight end if he can quit with the drops, but he and Beathard have a rapport going back to their college days at Iowa. In fact, last season he averaged more targets per game with Beathard than he did with Garoppolo. When Beathard went into the game last week his first pass was to Kittle; we can forget about the fact the refs stole the touchdown from the 49ers, but the point is the connection is there between the two of them. Garrett Celek isn’t getting enough targets to trust in your lineup, does that change with Beathard? Maybe, but it’ll take a couple weeks to find out. START: George Kittle, SIT: Garrett Celek

The Defense

Did you see how many missed tackles the 49ers defense had on Sunday? Let’s be honest there isn’t much to stay here other than unless they learn to tackle players and sack the quarterback, don’t start the 49ers defense. SIT: 49ers Defense
