49ersHub Picks: Who Do We Think Will Win Week 1?Iovr

September 8, 2018

Football season is finally back! We got a little appetizer on Thursday when the Atlanta Falcons took on the Philadelphia Eagles, but we don't care about that, do we? We are more interested in seeing how the San Francisco 49ers will do against the Minnesota Vikings! How do we think the game will go? Read on and find out!

Everything is pointing to a Vikings victory.  The Twin Cities are energized by the arrival of Kirk Cousins, the Vikings still have a top defense in the league, and Dalvin Cook is back and healthy. The 49ers go on the road with less talent, and it might be too much for them to start the season.  It also might not be.  The weakness of the Vikings offensive line is the interior, and Kirk Cousins can be forced into mistakes when he is pressured.  The only real weakness of the Vikings defense is the short-to-intermediate passing game, which can neutralize their pass rush.  This is also where Jimmy G excels.  I am going out on a limb and sayingthe 49ers pull off the win, 24-21, with a missed kick by Minnesota's rookie kicker Daniel Carlson as time expires to seal the victory for the good guys.

PREDICTION: 49ers 24-21

The 49ers start the regular season September 9th in Minnesota facing off against the Vikings. They finished the preseason 1-3 and had some ups and downs. The Vikings were 7-1 last season at home and with their run defense giving up just under three yards-per-carry in the running game. This is a huge road test for the young 49ers and I think it ends with Garoppolo taking his first defeat as starting quarterback. I think the defense comes out and plays strong, but that Minnesota proves to be too much for the offense.

PREDICTION: 49ers 17-Vikings 24

This Sunday, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's win-streak finally comes to an end. I know, I'm a downer. Jerick McKinnon's injury will play a larger factor in the loss, though I believe Garoppolo and the 49ers' defensive line will keep the game close. Safety Jaquiski Tartt picks off Kirk Cousins late in the second half, but the 49ers won't be able to eek out a victory.

PREDICTION: Minnesota 27 San Francisco 24.

The 49ers have no time to ease in to the 2018 season as they have to go on the road to take on the Vikings. Minnesota returns the top scoring defense from a year ago and added prized free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins to the offense. The crowd at US Bank Stadium is likely to be in midseason form to kick off a Super Bowl-or-bust season for the Vikings; all of these factors will be too much to overcome. The 49ers fall short in this one.

PREDICTION: Vikings, 23-20.

The absence of Reuben Foster and Jerick McKinnon prove to be a bigger issue than most fans anticipate. Dalvin Cook has a big day despite playing behind a shaky OL. Jimmy Garoppolo outplays Kirk Cousins in the matchup of Kyle Shanahan proteges, however, the 49ers come up short as the Vikings stout defense toughens up in the red zone.

PREDICTION: Vikings 27, 49ers 23

Jimmy G opens the season up with two TDs, with rookie Dante Pettis opening up his offensive rookie of the year campaign with a touchdown return. Sherman shuts down Thielen for most of the game and Cousins can’t out perform the Niners defense.   Morris rushes for over 100 yards. San Francisco bars run dry after Colbert make a last minute interception to seal the win

PREDICTION: Niners 24-17

Interior pass rush proves to be the difference for the 49ers with Solomon Thomas and Deforest Buckner wrecking havoc on the Vikings offensive line. Jimmy Garoppolo throws 2 TDs with 300 yards passing with no interceptions. 49ers start season 1-0 with a big win over the Vikings in Minneapolis.

PREDICTION: Niners over Vikings 23-20

The first test in the new era of Jimmy Garoppolo’s 49ers comes this Sunday. With an endless onslaught of hype, and the 49ers making Jimmy the then highest paid quarterback ever at that moment, there’s no better team to face than the Vikings and their league leading defense. All pro safety and corner Harrison Smith and Xavier Rhodes will look to capitalize on Garoppolo’s willingness to make contested throws. The Vikings defensive line won’t be facing their former teammate with Jerick McKinnon tearing his ACL. They will instead be going up against newly signed veteran Alfred Morris, and the exciting overachieving undrafted free agent Matt Breida. The 49ers have their work cut out for them on all sides of the ball. Still, I believe Jimmy and his sure handed receivers will be able to do what they do best, convert short precise passes that move the sticks. The occasional deep pass to Marquise Goodwin as well. The 49ers defense will come out shining a finally fully healthy trio of first round pick defensive lineman Arik Armstead, DeForest Buckner, and Solmon Thomas.

PREDICTION: I’m going 49ers 30, Vikings 24.

Heading into a new season with a justifiable sense of optimism, after years of mediocrity, makes it REALLY difficult to not be a homer for this prediction. The key in this game will be the 49ers’ suspect pass rush vs the Vikings’ suspect offensive line. I think between their O-line issues, and losing Pat Shurmur to the New York Giants, we’re going to see that hyped up offense stall out the gate. They’ll get back in it at the end, but Jimmy G keeps the pedal to the metal and leads the 49ers to a 28-24 victory

PREDICTION: 49ers 28-24

It's been fun having an undefeated quarterback leading your team. Suck it Tom Brady, Jimmy Garoppolo has never even lost a game. That will unfortunately end this Sunday. I hope I'm wrong but I see the 49ers starting the season 0-1 in a 33-30 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. At least they can get the loss over with early and move on.

PREDICTION: Vikings 33-30

Both teams have experienced big changes in the off-season that could affect their success of winning this game.  That being said, the Vikings at home with that elite defense gives Minnesota a huge advantage.  Success for the 49ers depends on Shanahan and his ability to spin some sorcery with his bag of offensive tricks and the offensive line which will need to help Jimmy G be special.  If DeForest Buckner also steps it up big time and the secondary holds the line, the Niners could upset.  But, in the end, I don’t think the winning formula will come through for San Francisco this time.

PREDICTION: Vikings 27, 49ers 16

The toughest challenge of the season for the 49ers may be their first one out of the gate. Going into one of the toughest home field advantages in the entire league and having to deal with a defensive mastermind & a roster full of All-Pro & Pro Bowl level players will be a daunting a task for the young and inexperienced 49ers. Thats not to say that they will not be up to the challenge, the last 5 games of the season showcased the talent & potential of this roster led by Head Coach Kyle Shanahan and Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Although it may sounded contrived this game will be ultimately won or loss in the trenches. The two biggest questions that need to be answered is can the 49ers revamped OL hold up against the Vikings star studded DL? and can the 49ers young and hungry DL take advantage of the Vikings’ maligned and injury riddled OL?

The power duo of Shanahan & Garoppolo along with the youngsters on the 49ers defense should do enough to keep them close into the deep stages of this game but unfortunately they will come up a bit short. The narrative will be that there is no such thing moral victories but they will definitely showcase to the entire league that they can hang with the elite teams in the NFL

PREDICTION: Vikings 20-17

The 49ers are still red hot from last season's win against the playoff-bound Jacksonville Jaguars, and that energy and momentum will continue as their regular season opens to potentially their biggest challenge of the whole season. The Vikings and Kirk Cousins will help us see the lowest scoring shootout in NFL history, and the Niners squeak one out and make a statement.

PREDICTION: 49ers 20-17
