Training Camp Recap Day 7: A Quick Look at Thursday’s Practice

August 3, 2018

The Good

Through the last five games of 2017 it was clear Jimmy Garoppolo and Marquise Goodwin had an immediate connection on the football field. That rapport has carried over into the offseason. The two connected on the first pass of practice for what would have been a 75-yard touchdown after Goodwin had beaten cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon. Towards the end of practice, the two connected again at Witherspoon’s expense as Goodwin elevated above him to make a leaping grab.

For the second time since camp started free safety Adrian Colbert returned an interception for a touchdown. During team drills Garoppolo was looking for wide receiver Kendrick Bourne. While Garoppolo delivered a well-thrown ball, Bourne was unable to secure the catch and the ball bounced into Colbert’s opportunistic hands for an easy interception and score.

The Bad

Thursday marked the fifth straight day in pads and both sides of the ball showed some sloppiness. The team will have one more practice on Friday before an off-day Saturday. Then the team will begin implementing game plans for the preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

Rookie linebacker Fred Warner wore a blue “no-contact” jersey Thursday after a physical play during Wednesday’s practice resulted in a chest injury the team is dealing with as “day to day.” Warner still took part in team drills and didn’t exactly abide by the “no-contact” mantra as he laid some lumber on fullback Kyle Juszczyk. Juice was slow to get up and had to be tended to by the training staff, but luckily only had the wind knocked out of him and was able to continue with team drills.

The Ugly

Right guard Joshua Garnett missed practice again today after knocking knees with a teammate earlier in the week. When head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked about Garnett’s timetable Wednesday he said “…I’d be more surprised if he’s not out there tomorrow [Thursday].” Garnett is not the clear choice to crack the starting lineup at guard and with his lack of versatility on the offensive line he could be a cut candidate if he’s beaten out by either Jonathan Cooper or Mike Person.
