Is Marsh and Attaochu's Development a Sign of Things to Come?

The first four days of training camp is now in the books for the San Francisco 49ers.

In training camp, both Solomon Thomas and DeForest Buckner have so far continued to exhibit their dominance of the offensive line.

Although the 49ers have a promising big-three in their pass rush with Arik Armstead, DeForest Buckner, and Solomon Thomas, one of the 49ers greatest weaknesses in recent seasons have been their edge rushers.

After breaking down media coverage and press conferences, we look at what could possibly be the biggest overhaul in the 49ers roster: their pass rush, and more specifically, edge rushers.

Two names that performed exceptionally well in the first days of practice in training camp were edge rushers Cassius Marsh and Jeremiah Attaochu.

Marsh was acquired by the 49ers after he played in nine games for the New England Patriots last season. He only managed three sacks in 15 games combined between the two teams, but two of those - and two forced fumbles - came in his six games with the 49ers.

The duo-tandem of Marsh and Buckner on the right side of the field created pressure and dominated the offensive line through many downs.

Whereas, newly signed linebacker Attaochu has had a sack in each practice, including two on Sunday. Attaochu only played in four games for the Los Angeles Chargers last season, recording just seven tackles with no sacks. When asked about Attaochu in a press conference, Robert Saleh commented that “[he] is relentless, business-like, athletic, and he is very determined, and we’re excited to have him, he comes with the right mindset.”

The development that Attaochu and Marsh have shown in training camp up to now is a great indicator towards a much stronger bounce-back season for the defensive line altogether.

With strong edge-rushers, the 49ers’ defensive line will be able to create much more pressure against other offensive lines and be able to attack the NFL’s greatest quarterbacks.
