Last year, the Niners had one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL, allowing forty-three sacks. During this offseason, they revamped their line with the addition of the center Weston Richburg on a five year deal, Mike McGlinchey in the first round of the 2018 Draft, and , Jonathan Cooper, a former first-round pick, through free agency. With Joshua Garnett back in the mix, the offensive line should be greatly improved, but how will they fare against each AFC West team?
The only player the Niners should be really worried about is Khalil Mack. McGlinchey will have his hands full here as he faces one of the best defensive ends in the league. Defensive tackle Mario Edwards is very inconsistent so he’s no real threat, and while linebacker Bruce Irvin also knows how to get to the quarterback, he too is inconsistent so overall the Niners should do well against this team.
Los Angeles Chargers
Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram will definitely be a tough challenge. Bosa is going into his third season with the Chargers and has already racked up an impressive twenty-three sacks. Ingram knows how to get pressure on the quarterback as well, but isn’t nearly as consistent as Bosa, so Jimmy Garoppolo will have to be aware of his surroundings in this one.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs pass rush isn’t as good as it was when Tamba Hali and Justin Houston were running the show. Now all they have are Houston and Chris Jones who are the only real threats on that defense, except for Eric Berry of course. Houston isn’t that great pass rusher he used to be, and his turning thirty soon doesn’t help him. Jones has flashed serious potential of getting off his blocks and getting pressure on the quarterback but he’s not nearly there yet and I don’t think he will be for another couple of years.
This is the only defensive line that should be absolutely concerning. The Broncos already have the best pass rusher in the league with Von Miller and then they said to themselves, Hey. Let’s go screw with everyone and add ANOTHER dominant pass rusher - someone like Bradley Chubb! Also doesn’t help the fact that Demarcus Ware is helping Chubb in OTAs with different types of hand techniques. Keep a close eye on the offensive line in this game because Joe Staley and McGlinchey are going to need to have a great game for Garoppolo to stay on his feet.
