Scouting Spotlight: WR Courtland Sutton
4Y JR Wide Receiver SMU
6’4” 216 lbs.
Projected 40 time – 4.5
Sutton has prototype size for the position and uses that size effectively in the run game and on 50/50 balls down field… NFL body right now… Sutton put up excellent numbers in 2017 despite being constantly double-teamed … Will benefit from an NFL offense and coaching … Excellent blocker down field and always looks for contact … Has good speed for a taller WR, eats up cushion faster than defensive backs expect … Strong runner after the catch with enough speed to break big plays … Served as team captain at SMU.
Sutton has good, but not great hands … Catch rate of 45% in 2017?…Strength of competition will be an issue…Sometimes uses his hands too much to get open when contested (was flagged on several OPI calls)… Will need work as a route runner … Rounds off routes at times … Needs to be more sudden in and out of cuts … Can be baited into verbal and physical exchanges, resulting in personal foul penalties.
Sutton has all the qualities necessary to be an elite NFL wide receiver. Like most college WRs, he’s still raw and will need to be coached up. His route running is flat at times and his hands aren’t as strong when ball is away from his body. He is a big, muscular WR who is dangerous with the ball in his hands and has the speed to turn short plays into long ones. Will block his man out of frame on most plays. Pro Bowl potential.
Pro Comparison/Potential: Terrell Owens
