Friday Morning Huddle: Can the 49ers Smoke the Bears?

The Jimmy Garoppolo era is officially here. As I’m sure every 49er fan knows by now, QB Jimmy Garoppolo is getting the start in week 13 in Chicago. QB CJ Beathard sustained an injury late in last week’s game against the Seahawks and Garoppolo played the last 3 snaps of the game and did something no 49ers QB has done all season, throw a TD pass against the Seahawks.

Looking ahead to week 13 it’s hard not to just talk about Garoppolo. This game may be one of the most important games for the 49ers since 2014. Garoppolo could bring excitement to this franchise that we haven’t seen since 2014. But there are 10 other guys on the field on offense wearing red and gold. This is a very winnable game for the 49ers playing a Bears team that is 3-8 and may be looking for a new coach for 2018. Can the 49ers get their 2nd win of the season?

JIMMY G ERA IS HERE

It’s a new era in 49ers football. This guy was handpicked by GM John Lynch and HC Kyle Shanahan. They traded an early 2nd rounder and look at him as the future of the positon. Garoppolo will be taking all the 1stteam reps in practice, and Kyle Shanahan will be game planning for Garoppolo under center. He will highlight the quick release and mobility in the pocket. Garoppolo showed in last week’s TD pass that he has the pocket presence of a veteran. This is the skill that rookie QB CJ Beathard has been lacking.

Offensive line needs to do better

The new QB under center should help the offensive line, but this unit needs to do a better job. Last week CJ Beathard was under fire from the 1st whistle and it didn’t stop till he has taken out of the game due to injury. New QB Garoppolo is the team’s future at the position and this offensive line needs to protect that. Hopefully RT Trent Brown will be back from injury. The interior of the offensive line has been the real issue this season with Brown and veteran LT Joe Staley both having great seasons. G Brandon Fusco has been the better of the guards with G Laken Thomlinson being a liability in the run and especially the pass. I don’t see this getting any better but there are things the team can do to help the offensive line out. Play action will be a big part. This Bears team ranks 8th in the NFL in sacks, they can get after the passer.

Get play action going

Highlight your new QBs skills. Garoppolo has an unbelievably fast release when throwing the football. Shanahan’s philosophy on offense is always to use play action to get the passing game going. The threat of the run needs to be there, so RB Carlos Hyde needs to make his presence known early. Unleash Hyde and kill the defense with play action passes from Garoppolo. Hyde had a rough day against Seattle last week and will be looking to have a bounce back game.

Make rookie QB Mitch Trubisky’s day tough

As we have seen the last few weeks with rookie CJ Beathard, pressure is not a rookie QBs friend. Mitch Trubisky was the 2nd overall pick in the most recent NFL draft and is having an up and down season for the Bears. He’s shown at times the qualities that made him the 2nd overall pick, but hasn’t made a big splash in the NFL. The 49ers will get after him early and often. DC Robert Saleh will dial up some serious blitzes and pressure for Trubisky. Fellow rookie DE Solomon Thomas along with 2nd year DT Deforest Buckner will make life difficult for Mr. Trubisky.

This is a 1-10 team who have no chance at the playoffs, this is clearly a season the team will want to forget, but that doesn’t mean these games don’t matter. Making the trade for the future of the QB position in the middle of the season gives the team a jump start into the 2018 season. Garoppolo can start to learn the intricacies of the Shanahan offense and also create some rapport with some of the pass catchers on the team. The excitement is real with this team now that a potential franchise QB is in the building. Going from a bad team to a good team cannot happen if you don’t have a guy under center that can win you games. This is a great starting point to establishing the winning culture that we all keep hearing about.
