Report: 49ers plan to release LB Ahmad Brooks
Per Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, the 49ers plan to let go of LB Ahmad Brooks.
Brooks is one of the longest-tenured players on the 49ers, seemingly always making it past the final cuts and finding himself on the roster. The 49ers' linebacker has been with the team for 10 seasons -- crazy right? He's run into trouble off-the-field, but it never impacted what he did on it.
For this career, he's had 53.5 sacks and 370 tackles. He's also been pretty reliable these past few seasons, playing in at least 13 games in his last nine seasons.
At 33 years old, Brooks has been competing with LBs Eli Harold and Pita Taumoepenu and it looks like the run has finally come to an end. Brooks has been in the lead for sacks since 2013, so the release comes at an interesting time. It probably means that Harold will slot into the starting SAM linebacker role.
It's going to be an important season for Harold, who can negotiate for a contract extension at the end of the season. With a starting role in place for Harold, it's time for him to step up.
