49ers Draft DT D.J. Jones from Ole Miss with Pick No. 198
The San Francisco 49ers have gone back to draft defense in the 6th round of the NFL Draft, taking Ole Miss' DT D.J. Jones with Pick No. 198.
Jones comes in at 6-foot-1, 319 pounds and should provide solid depth along the defensive line. He'll likely be a 0/1T in the 49ers' defensive line and probably take over for Earl Mitchell, the free agent that the 49ers signed.
Here's what NFL.com's Lance Zierlein had to say about the 49ers' draft pick:
Jones has a freaky combination of power and athleticism that isn't seen all that often. While his playing style is reminiscent of Grady Jarrett's, keep in mind that he's a bigger player. Despite his impressive play attributes, Jones failed to generate the production that his flashes on tape would indicate he's capable of. If a coach can unlock more consistency, Jones has a chance to flourish as a one-gapping nose with three-down ability.
In two years at Ole Miss, Jones had six sacks, 8.5 TFLs, 70 tackles. He also had one forced fumble during his time in college.
He's an athletic nose tackle, he'll be able to clog the middle of the defensive line and stop the run. The 49ers have committed to stopping the run and that starts with D.J. Jones.
