The 49ers continue to beef up the defensive side of the by adding LB Pita Taumoepenu with Pick No. 202 in the 6th Round of the NFL Draft.
Taumoepenu comes in at 6-foot-1, 243 pounds and was primarily a pass rusher at Utah. Just for reference, that's how his name is pronounced: (peet-tuh tao-mo-eh-pen-new).
In 2016, Taumoepenu had 34 tackles, nine TFL's and also seven sacks.
Taken from NFL.com's Lance Zierlein, here's his scouting breakdown of Taumoepenu:
Pass rush specialist with limited exposure to the game who has posted consistent sack and pressure production throughout his career thanks to his athleticism and motor. He's undersized and lacks the strength to factor in as an every-down 3-4 OLB option, but he does have a chance to become a backup rush linebacker and might even warrant consideration as a 4-3 WILL who can step into a special teams role quickly.
He was projected to be either a 7th rounder or UDFA, so the 49ers might have been reaching a bit here, but to add a pass rusher this late in the draft is ideal.
Welcome Pita Taumoepenu to the 49ers!
