John Lynch did say "Stay Awake" at the NFL Scouting Combine press conference, and he's staying true to his word.
The 49ers will go ahead and sign QB Matt Barkley, according to Ian Rapaport of the NFL Network.
The former USC Quarterback spent the past season with the Chicago Bears. He started in 6 games after QB Jay Cutler got hurt, where he had a 59.5 completion percentage and 1,611 yards. He had 8 touchdowns to 14 interceptions, but is better than the numbers show.
Working with Hoyer last year will help Barkley develop as the backup quarterback. With none on the roster, the 49ers were desperate to add quarterbacks and they have added two in the first few days of free agency.
He's been with Arizona and Philadelphia as backups, but didn't get much playing time at either of the stops.
It'll be interesting to see what Shanahan does with Barkley, only time will tell.
Let us know what you think of this signing @49ersHub or @akashanav!
