Report: 49ers to Sign WR Pierre Garcon
According to Chris Mortensen, the San Francisco will make a big splash in free agency and sign Pierre Garcon.
I wouldn't be too worried about the $16 million in the first year, as the contract is probably front-loaded. This just means that a lot of the first year money will be a signing bonus, and the money in later years will be less. This allows for the 49ers to get off the hook easily.
Mortensen went on Sirius Radio and clarified what he said, thanks to Jeff Deeney of PFF for catching it on Twitter.
It'll be interesting to see what he actually receives, but $11 million over two years is a lot more reasonable.
Garcon, who will turn 31 during the season, will be heading into his 10th season in the NFL. Aside from the play on the field, he will bring veteran leadership to a wide receiver room that doesn't have any experience besides WR Jeremey Kerley.
Garcon, in Washington last season, caught 79 passes on 114 targets, for 1,041 yards and that wasn't even his best season. His best season came under Kyle Shanahan in 2013, when he caught a 113 passes for 1,346 yards.
The most promising thing from this is that Kyle Shanahan was able to lure Garcon from Washington -- without a starting quarterback in place.
Dan Hellie from NFL Network went to add this on the Garcon deal.
Garcon should officially sign the dotted line tomorrow, but it looks like Shanahan and Lynch are spending money in Free Agency!
