According to newly-added NFL Network reporter, Steve Smith, Torrey Smith will be released by the 49ers and become a Free Agent this upcoming season.
It was an unexpected move, but Torrey Smith was due $9.6 million and I think that the 49ers believed he wasn't a fit in their system. They probably couldn't trade him due to his big contract, and thus decided to release him.
The past two seasons, Smith has been average, catching 53 passes for only 930 yards. He was a deep threat in Baltimore and was expected to be the same for Kaepernick, but due to poor quarterback play, he wasn't maximized.
With the 49ers headed into a full rebuild, the time was right to move on from Torrey Smith. He was one of Trent Baalke's prized free-agent signings, but he didn't live up to the hype.
Off the field, Torrey Smith has been stellar, he's been fantastic in the community and a leader in the locker room.
Wherever he decides to go, he'll be a great leader and person to have on the team! Best of luck Torrey Smith!
