Who Should the 49ers' Target? Combine Edition
If you needed another reason to dislike the LA Rams, look no further than this past December the 24th. Instead of having the #1 pick in the draft, the Rams decided not to show up for the last 5 minutes of their game against the 49ers. The 49ers mounted a comeback and defeated the Rams 22-21, thus ending any real hope of the 49ers gaining the top pick in the draft. Now, instead of writing Myles Garrett on their draft card, the 49ers will have to look to other options.
While quarterback is an obvious need in San Francisco, the 49ers would be foolish to force it with the 2nd overall pick. While all good players, with the potential to be VERY good down the road, Mitch Trubisky, DeShone Kizer and Deshaun Watson are all a reach at #2 overall. All have first round talent, but somewhere beyond the top 10. If you decided to trade out of the top 10, or trade back in to the bottom of round 1, then they would be valued picks.
The 49ers are not a year away from contending for the playoffs. That is why you take the best player available with the 2nd pick. The 49ers have holes, depth and talent issues all over the roster. The shouldn’t feel obligated to draft a quarterback early. Not with so many good quarterback prospects available in the 2018 NFL Draft. With that being said, let’s focus on some players the 49ers should consider with the 2nd overall pick:
1. Jamal Adams - Why would the 49ers draft a safety? Well, Adams has the potential to be Ronnie Lott 2.0. He is aggressive in run support. He locates the ball well, and has very good coverage skills. Put him at your strong safety for the next 10 and you will never regret it.
2. Malik Hooker - Safety again?!?! Hear me out. Eric Reid is in the final year of his deal. Who knows if Jimmie Ward can become the Earl Thomas clone that the 49ers are hoping for. Hooker has excellent size and deep coverage skills.
3. Mike Williams - The 49ers have 0 wideouts that cause a team to change their defensive game plan. Williams may not be the speed merchant that you would hope for, but neither was Jerry Rice. Williams is physical and makes the difficult catch look easy.
A lot will depend on potential trades and what the 49ers look like after free agency starts next week. These 3 are the only 3 I would focus on with that 2nd pick. Note: I would have included Reuben Foster in this list, however, after his dismissal from the combine(read the story, his attitude just cost him millions) he is no longer in consideration for the 2nd pick overall.
